It was in late 1999 that a Wilson County resident, Wendell Ethridge, was searching for something to help his young daughter overcome a reading challenge.  He discovered the Beacon Literacy Program while searching the internet.  Contact was made with Phillip McMillan of the United Kingdom, who had developed the Beacon Literacy Program for his own son.  Provision was made for Mr. McMillan to come to Mt. Juliet, Tennessee and demonstrate the Beacon Literacy teaching plan.
Two pilot program sites were chosen for Beacon Literacy to be tried and tested, Stoner Creek Elementary in Mt. Juliet and Restoration Community Outreach, Inc. in West Wilson County, Tennessee.  The program proved to be very successful, with children advancing at least one grade level in Reading in 20 weeks of lessons.
Beacon Literacy trained the tutors who tutored the Beacon Literacy students.  The program has continued to be successful at Restoration and other locations in Tennessee as well as other states over the country.
Restoration Community Outreach, Inc. uses the Beacon Literacy Program to assist students in reading with two (2), one (1) hour sessions per week at our facility.  These sessions are one-on-one with the volunteer tutor.  Beacon Literacy is a very successful program that guarantees a gain of at least one grade level in word recognition in only 10 weeks, or 20 sessions, of instruction!
How it works:

  • Beacon is one-on-one
  • Two (2) one (1) hour sessions each week.
  • 15 - 20 minutes of homework each day.
  • Many students only require 20 sessions, or 10 weeks of instructions
  • Students will improve by one (1) grade level in those 20 sessions
  • Sessions can easily be customized to fit student needs with or without supplemental materials.

Sessions are split into two separate activities:

  • The sound structure and phonetic rules of the English Language.
  • Textual reading, dictation, and comprehension exercises.
  • Beacon uses a Self-Voice Feedback approach.
  • Research shows that students learn much more quickly and retain more learning by using their own voice.
  • Our exclusive technology capitalizes on how the inner voice can reinforce the phonemic and recognition skills necessary for successful reading.

The tutor acts as a guide to ensure proper pronunciation and recording
